CASE STUDY: STRATEGIC & GROWTH PLANNING
The Challenge:
After 7 successful years experimenting with different programs and fine tuning delivery at both the Bus and Base for hundreds of thousands of students in and around New York, the BioBus set out to embark on a campaign to grow its reach and impact over 5 years. They needed to answer questions about how they might diversify their revenue stream, differentiate offerings for teachers seeking expand the content, and build an organization ready to deliver the model at scale.
The Approach:
I worked closely with the CEO and senior leadership to identify critical questions they needed to answer about their program, model, values, and priorities to define a plan that built the foundations for a growing organization. In addition to partnership with the leadership team, I interviewed parents, teachers, board members, and other key stakeholders to better understand what the BioBus community needed and wanted from the organization.
Impact
We developed the organization's first strategic plan that is helping to shape and prioritize the work to be done in phase two of the organization's growth. Where phase 1 focused on developing and delivering the model, building a customer base, and developing staff talent, phase 2 is focused on building up the capacity of the organization to deliver the program in multiple locations, reaching 3-4 times the number of participants while also expanding the depth of offerings for a smaller subset.
The organization opened a second permanent site in Harlem and launched a second BioBus in 2017 while also creating new in-school programs that allowed them to operate their programs in partnership with teachers across the tri-state area at a significantly larger scale. Prior to the pandemic, the organization was well on its way to meeting the 5-year program and revenue goals outlined in the strategic plan.
